5 Things That Have Been a Total Gamechanger this Lockdown

With the risk of putting it too simply, life has been a riiiide over the past few months (I'm sure you feel me) with its fair share of ups, downs, lefts and rights (and shake it all about)! As someone who loves a plan and finds it hard to just go with flow, the uncertain shape of the future has been a huge challenge when trying to keep myself growing, focused and grounded. But! I’ve found comfort and security in carving out little pockets of stability and routine in which I show up for myself daily and give myself some love.

As the term ‘the new normal’ fades out of the headlines and we all grapple with what that actually means both collectively and individually, I wanted to share 5 things that I have welcomed into my day-to-day during lockdown.  These five seemingly simple acts have been total gamechangers for me and I invite you to give them a go. No matter what the future holds, I will be bringing them with me.

Bulletproof Coffee

I drink Bulletproof coffee every. single. day. It has honestly become a ritual for me. Coffee used to leave me feeling super anxious and jittery, but did you know that the fats in Bulletproof coffee work with your metabolism and makes the caffeine enter your system slowly?! This means it leaves me feeling full and energised all morning.

Here's how I make mine: 1 cup of HIGH QUALITY coffee (no instant BS plz), 1 tbsp ghee or butter and 1 tsb MCT oil. Brew the coffee as you usually would and then whip everything up in a blender, and voilà, beautiful, creamy coffee that won't send you over the edge!

Meditation

Meditation has hands down changed my life.  I meditate pretty much every day and I really do notice the difference when I don’t. What’s so beautiful about meditation is that it can be fluid and its completely yours. There are so many different forms of meditation and you have the freedom to find what works best for you. I do guided meditations now. By letting someone else guide me, I am able to completely switch off from my own thoughts, be fully present in an osmosis others’ words and collective energies.

Movement

Move your body in whatever way you can. Move for moving’s sake. Go outside and wave your arms in the air to music. Stretch. Jump. Dance. Spin. Hop. Run. Roll. Move slowly or move quickly. It doesn’t matter what you do. When we move consciously, we become fully present in our bodies. With so much of our life now being indoors, sat down, and for the most part in the same four walls, moving daily – even if its just for 10 minutes - makes a serious difference. I now love walks. Who knew!?

Read Fiction

More likely than not, you read a lot in a day. News feeds, Instagram posts, emails, articles, text messages… We’re constantly bombarded with images and text. But falling back in love with reading fiction and getting lost in someone else’s imagination has provided me with some escapism from the world. For me, putting my phone down and picking up my book before I go to bed creates a buffer between my day and my sleep, and really helps me switch off. We all deserve a little escapism and rest.

Gratitude

This one is important. In moments when life feels smaller, different, or difficult, consciously taking the time to check in with the things I am grateful for grounds me. Gratitude can create a powerful state of mind and being. Every morning and evening I write down three things I’m grateful for. They don’t have to be anything grandiose – they usually aren’t. But the act of writing things down first thing in the morning presents you with the opportunity to step differently into the day, and doing it in the evening gives you the opportunity to reflect and ask yourself what you could have done differently. Mine is usually not getting so annoyed at X, Y or Z!

And there you have it, five really simple things that have totally changed my life and essentially allowed me to survive lockdown, as a 28 year old, living with her mother again, having recently gone through a very painful breakup!

What's been a gamechanger for you? I'm intrigued!
