5 Tips for Working From Home

Many of us have been working from home for quite some time now, and really, no one is really sure when and how we will go back to working in offices or co-working spaces. With second lockdowns also impending and in play, an afternoon in a café or a library are also off the table for now.

So while we’re here and in it - here are 5 super simple tips that will make working from home a whole lot more comfortable and focused!

Protect your neck

If your work requires you to work from a laptop or a computer make sure that protect your neck! Being hunched over for however many hours a day is really no good for you and can cause a lot of stiffness, pain and bad posture. Help yourself out by making sure that your screen is at a good height - pop it on some books or a laptop stand! A separate keyboard and mouse is also a really good idea if you work from a laptop as this will keep your arms and shoulders at a comfortable height too.

Personal space and boundaries

Everyone’s home set up is different. Some of us live by ourselves, some of us have spare bedrooms or offices, and some of us are in shared houses with with and without communal spaces. Some of us will be working from our kitchen tables, others from bedrooms. Whatever your set up is, having conversations about creating space and boundaries is really important!

If you are living with other people try to create some space between yourselves where possible. Talk to each other and clearly communicate your wants and needs. For example; “I would really appreciate it if I was not disturbed between X and Z o’clock”. And even if you are living by yourself, you can create space between work time and down time.

Work to a timer

You will be surprised how much you can get done in a short period of time! Set a timer for a really doable chunk of time, pop your phone away and really focus for that time. Then have a little break. This will really help boost your productivity and focus, as well as break up the day into very workable chunks. I usually go for 40 mins on and 20 mins off!

Stretch

Why not stretch in those breaks! Loosen up your shoulders and neck and release your spine. Touch your toes and just wiggle around a bit. You’ll find that you will sit far more comfortably.

//05

Change position often

This one is again similar to stretching and is all about making sure you stay comfortable and limber. Sitting in the same position can end up pretty sore after a while, so mix it up as and when you can.
